Classic Car Restoration Process

Our Classic Car Restoration Process

Restoring a classic car is a meticulous process that requires skill, patience, and attention to detail. At Caledonia Coachworks, we follow a structured, step-by-step approach to ensure that every vehicle we restore is restored to its former glory.

Every stage is carefully executed precisely from the initial inspection and disassembly to bodywork, mechanical repairs, and interior refurbishment. Our team combines traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques to achieve outstanding results while preserving the vehicle’s authenticity. Throughout the restoration, we work closely with our clients, keeping them informed and involved in key decisions.

Whether it’s a complete ground-up rebuild or a partial restoration, our goal is to deliver a classic car that looks, feels, and performs as it did in its prime. In this article, we’ll walk you through each stage of our restoration process, providing insight into the expertise and dedication required to bring these timeless vehicles back to life.

Assessment & Consultation

Before any physical work begins, we start with a comprehensive assessment and consultation. This initial stage involves evaluating the vehicle’s current condition and discussing the owner’s goals for the restoration.

Whether you’re aiming for concours-level perfection or a reliable weekend cruiser, we customise the process to align with your vision and budget. We’ll review the car’s history, identify any known issues, and provide an overview of the steps involved, establishing clear expectations from the outset.

Disassembly of a Classic Car

Disassembly

The first step is to disassemble the vehicle. We aim to remove all components and fittings from the car’s bodywork. This allows us to assess the required work in greater depth and proceed to the next stage.

Surface Processing

The body, chassis, and associated panels are stripped and cleaned. This process enables us to evaluate the body’s condition thoroughly before work begins. It concludes with a coating that protects the bare steel from flash corrosion.

Bodywork Repairs

The essential element of any classic vehicle is the body. Once we have completed the cleaning processes and assessed the condition of the body and chassis, we can formulate a plan to address any issues. The approach we take, and the time involved in this stage are, in reality, the most variable of all stages and will differ significantly from project to project.

Electrophoretic Paint (E-Coat)

E-coating is a high-tech process that has undergone significant evolution over the past 50 years, primarily for use by automotive manufacturers.

This is the most comprehensive treatment that any vehicle body can receive, and it has become a key reason why most modern vehicles last considerably longer than classic ones.

Classic Car Restoration: Protection & Longevity

Protection and Longevity

The most crucial stage, but often the most overlooked, is protecting the body and chassis. For years, we have collaborated with reputable manufacturers to develop a process that, in our opinion, is the most thorough method of classic car protection currently available to owners.

We utilise state-of-the-art products to seal and safeguard your car’s precious bodywork from the elements and road wear.

Paint & Refinishing

Once all necessary repairs are complete, the vehicle advances to the paint and refinishing stage. Preparation is key — every surface is meticulously prepped, primed, and perfected before any paint is applied.

We utilise premium automotive finishes and colour-matching technology to replicate original factory colours or create a bespoke look if the client prefers something unique. Multiple coats are applied and cured to achieve a flawless finish, followed by polishing and detailing to enhance depth and gloss.

Assembly

With the paintwork complete and fully cured, reassembly can begin. This stage involves carefully reinstalling every component—from the engine and drivetrain to wiring, trim, and interior fittings—ensuring everything is aligned, functional, and finished to the highest standards.

Our team handles each element with precision, treating every part like a piece of the car’s history. This is also when mechanical systems are tested and tuned, and modern upgrades can be integrated if desired.

Completion

Before the car is returned, it undergoes a final quality control inspection to ensure that every aspect of the restoration meets our exacting standards.

We conduct thorough road testing, final detailing, and a comprehensive review with the client to ensure their complete satisfaction.

The result is more than just a restored classic — it’s a revitalised piece of automotive heritage, ready to be enjoyed and admired for years to come.
